Pediatric Appointment Follow-up

Life in our house has become pretty low key and boring. Our typical day consists of feeding Luke, changing Luke and napping. Our biggest adventures have come from going to the grocery store and going to doctors appointments. Today we had a follow up with the pediatrician to check Lukes weight gain.

Luke was 6 pounds 15.4 ounces at birth. When we went to the doctor for his 4 day appointment, he had dropped over a pound weighing in at 5 pounds 15.1 ounces, for a loss of 18%. Anything over 10% is worrisome, and we were nearly double that. Our instructions were to add an extra ounce of fluid with each feeding. Our appointment on Friday showed slight improvement with Luke weighing in at 6 pound 3.1 ounces. We were told to keep supplementing. Today, he weighed in at 6 pounds 15.1 ounces, so he is almost back up to his birth weight 🙂

At this point we are to wean him away from the extra supplementation and back to strictly breast feeding. I’m so glad that he is doing so well, but sad that my husband is slowly relinquishing his feeding duty. He doesn’t seem to mind, but I am so sad that they won’t get that bonding experience for awhile. Stupid hormones are at play here I think. At this point I am still going to pump as much as I can. I am able to get about 2.5 ounces if I combine the milk that I pump throughout the whole day…..on top of what I feed him from the breast.

My current plan of action is to attempt exclusive breast feeding unless Luke seems hungry beyond what I could feed him. Ronny then will feed him with a supplement. I also plan to pump enough milk that Ronny can feed Luke one bottle a day of breast milk.

  1. So great he has put that weight on again and things are going well. As you settle into breastfeeding you will notice you get more with pumping too. I’m sure it will all work out just fine. Nice to hear little Luke is thriving!
