Comparison Shopping Leads To Doubt

Yesterday I did dishes, I did laundry, and I comparison shopped online. The laundry and dishes aren’t really even worth mentioning aside from the fact that I actually did dishes and laundry. In the comparison shopping phase of things I made a list of all of the stuff we have left to get for Luke’s arrival and first year, and then compared prices between Amazon.com, Babies R Us, Target and Walmart.

What I seem to have found right now is that Amazon and Walmart usually are the same price for the same items. Of course there are some things that are cheaper at the other two stores too. With Amazon, target and babies r us 30-60 days prior to the estimated birth of your wee one, you will get a completion discount to finish buying up items from your registry. Babies R Us and target both give you a one time 10% off coupon. Amazon emails you a certificate for 19% off unless you are a member of Amazon mom, then it’s a 15% off coupon. The only caveat is that it can only be used for baby related items.

Tying in comparison shopping with the completion discount, it is going to save quite a bit of money buying online through Amazon with the extra 15% off. I don’t have an exact price breakdown yet, but I will once I have finished and I will share it with you all so you can see the price difference.

While I was online shopping I was hit pretty hard with a case of doubt. I have absolutely no idea what I am doing, and I’m even more unsure of whether or not I can do this. I don’t know if the things I think I need are true necessities or luxury items that my pocket book would rather I go without. I don’t know how were going to pay for the remaining items on our registry. I don’t know if my husbands income alone is enough to sustain us so that I can continue to stay at home with the little one. I don’t know if I am making the best decisions for my husband and this little guy. I just don’t know what the heck I am doing!

My plan for today (since I blogged about 12 hours earlier than normal) is to go have a good cry in the shower while sitting in the bottom of the tub, finish up my comparison shopping list and pick the best deals, and attempt to convince my husband to help me spring clean the bedroom. I might try to convince him that Luke and I need ice cream too……but we shall see.

  1. i’m now eligible for my 15% discount on amazon. just to warn you, it didn’t include some of the bottles, the crib mattress, childproofing, a few toys, and anything related to diapering. i’ve compromised and registered at amazon, buy buy baby, and target, just to cover my bases. we’ve only given out the link for babylist to make it easier for people to just go to one place and pick.

  2. This is completely normal. I freaked out trying to get ready for my baby. Here is what I’ve learned since then and over the years: most of what you need you can get at Target for the best price if you buy their brand, Up and Up. Diapers, formula, wipes, all the essentials. Plus, if you use Cartwheel you generally get another 10-15% off. They have stock up sales 3-4 times a year and that’s when you can really get some great deals. I like Amazon for other things, but not for baby supplies. Babies r us is just blatantly more expensive than anywhere else, I don’t bother with it anymore. I hope this puts you at ease a little bit!

    • Thank you. I’m looking into all of that as well 🙂 I’m frugal, not working and have a baby on the way…..cue overload lol. We are cloth diapering for the most part so I’m good there and most essentials are cheaper it seems without the discount at Walmart but I’m still comparing.

  3. I totally know what you mean. I actually started registries on Buy Buy Baby, Babies R Us and Amazon… and Amazon is by far the cheapest. I don’t plan on having a shower, so these lists are for me as a checklist. But I notice the prices on Amazon drop frequently too. You and I are due around the same time, so I think i’m going to go with Amazon – I then daily check the items where “prices have dropped’ and if they are significant – then I go for it. The other sites offer one item coupon discounts…and then I compare to the Amazon prices and go from there. I figure…. although i’m buying SUPER slow… I may as well take advantage of these coupons and price reductions as much as I can!! Hang in there… Ice cream sounds good too!

  4. I’m doing my registries on Amazon and Target. Amazons deals on most items are just too good not to load up on especially after the 15% off each item since I’m an Amazon Mom account holder. You can make multiple registries and link them all through my registries.com also. Sorry it was overwhelming for you. I recently send ha I into the registry and deleted or switched out items I now think will not be necessary. XO

  5. I’m getting most of our stuff second hand on Facebook swap sites for mommas. A lot of it is almost new/barely used. I got our $65 high chair for $10, and it looks like it just came out of the box. I got the $170 bedside co-sleeper for $40 and it is also barely used. The deals are out there!! You can dooo ittt! 🙂

  6. We thought that the 10% coupon on BrU was a one time gig, but it’s actually not! You can use it as many times as you want for registry items for up to 60 days after your EDD. SO we threw on a bunch of stuff to our registry and bought what we needed. (we had a 15% off coupon) and ALSO with multiples, BrU will give you an additional 10% off for things that you buy 2 of the same of. So you can always do that too!,

  7. i think your freak out is totally normal. But just remember that you still have time for those random, unexpected gifts that you weren’t expecting. God is cool like that. Just tell Him what you need and then watch Him provide. I remember a story in the bible about a guy who needed money for his taxes. He told him to go fishing and then look in the fishes mouth…and what do you know? The exact amount he needed for his taxes were in the fishes mouth. Soooo….hang in there girl. Your blessings may come later and in a way you weren’t expecting. xoxoxo
